چکیده

[1] Ice-associated phytoplankton blooms in the southeastern Bering Sea can critically impact the food web structure, from lower tropic level production to marine fisheries. By coupling pelagic and sea ice algal components, our 1-D ecosystem model successfully reproduced the observed ice-associated blooms in 1997 and 1999 at the NOAA/PMEL mooring M2. The model results suggest that the ice-associated blooms were seeded by sea ice algae released from melting sea ice. For an ice-associated bloom to grow and reach the typical magnitude of phytoplankton bloom in the region, ice melting-resulted low-salinity stratification must not be followed by a strong mixing event that would destroy the stratification. The iceassociated blooms had little impacts on the annual primary production, but had significant impacts in terms of shifting phytoplankton species, and the timing and magnitude of the bloom. These changes, superimposed on a gradual ecosystem shift attributed to global warming, can dramatically alter the Bering Sea ecosystem. Citation: Jin, M., C. Deal, J. Wang, V. Alexander, R. Cold Regime Interannual Variability of Primary and Secondary Producer Community Composition in the Southeastern Bering Sea

Variability of hydrographic conditions and primary and secondary productivity between cold and warm climatic regimes in the Bering Sea has been the subject of much study in recent years, while interannual variability within a single regime and across multiple trophic levels has been less well-documented. Measurements from an instrumented mooring on the southeastern shelf of the Bering Sea were ...

Summer phytoplankton production and transport along the shelf break in the Bering Sea

-A general model is presented for the production and fate of phytoplankton during summer in two regions over the continental shelf of the Bering Sea. We propose that both regions of productivity are supported by nutrients transported into the area with the Bering Slope Current and that the fate of the phytodetritus produced is significantly affected by advection. We hypothesize that one system ...

Vertical mixing effects on the phytoplankton bloom in the southeastern Bering Sea midshelf

[1] A vertically one-dimensional ecosystem model was developed and applied to the southeastern Bering Sea middle shelf. The physical model includes a 2.5-level turbulence model. Tidal forcing was introduced to improve representation of tidal mixing in addition to wind stirring and thermal stratification. The simulated currents, thermocline and mixed-layer depth (MLD) agree well with observation...

Phytoplankton blooms beneath the sea ice in the Chukchi sea

In the Arctic Ocean, phytoplankton blooms on continental shelves are often limited by light availability, and are therefore thought to be restricted to waters free of sea ice. During July 2011 in the Chukchi Sea, a large phytoplankton bloom was observed beneath fully consolidated pack ice and extended from the ice edge to 4100 km into the pack. The bloom was composed primarily of diatoms, with ...

The frequency and extent of sub-ice phytoplankton blooms in the Arctic Ocean

In July 2011, the observation of a massive phytoplankton bloom underneath a sea ice-covered region of the Chukchi Sea shifted the scientific consensus that regions of the Arctic Ocean covered by sea ice were inhospitable to photosynthetic life. Although the impact of widespread phytoplankton blooms under sea ice on Arctic Ocean ecology and carbon fixation is potentially marked, the prevalence o...
